Palmetto Golf Club was established in 1892. William C. Whitney and Thomas Hitchcock originally built four holes with sand greens, presently the 16th, 17th and 18th greens. Herbert Leeds later laid out the remainder of the first nine holes. By 1895 Palmetto had become an 18-hole course. Leeds and Mackerell, the club's first pro, laid out the remainder of the course. In January 1896, the Palmetto Golf Club became the 30th member to join the United States Golf Association. The original membership certificate still hangs in the pro-shop. Dr. Alister Mackenzie designed the plans for Palmetto's grass greens and lengthening of the course which was completed in 1933. One of the early members of the club was George Herbert Walker, donor of the Walker Cup and grandfather of United States President George Bush.
